The artistic craftsmanship in Leh Ladakh is not developed as in other areas
of Kashmir. Most of the luxury items in Leh Ladakh are obtained through imports
from other parts of the country. There are still many traditionally designed
items which you cannot find in any other part of India such as Pashmina Shawls,
Hand made woolen garments, Pashmina carpets, Wall hangings, Mural paintingns
in the Gompas etc. Items of everyday use such as cooking pots and bowls, as
well as agricultural implements are supplied by local blacksmiths.
Accommodations in Ladakh
Leh offers many kinds of accommodation to suit almost every pocket and preference.
Most of the hotels are family-run establishments and, therefore, service is
more personalized than professional. Hotels are classified into A, B, C and
D/economy categories while guest houses are divided into upper, medium and economy
class. In the newly opened areas of the region - Nubra, Changthang and the Drok-pa
area - tourist infrastructure is not yet adequately developed. The State Tourism
Department has started development of accommodation facilities like tourist
complexes and hiker's huts at various places in these areas. However, in some
of these places, especially in the Nubra Valley, tourists can stay as paying
guests with some families who have set up paying guest house in their homes
under a State Government sponsored incentive scheme. For visitors to Tso-moriri
Lake, accommodation is available near Korzok village in tented camps, which
spring up every season. Similar camps are available in various parts of Nubra
valley. During the peak tourist season i.e. early June to mid-September, it
is advisable to book hotel rooms in advance. By late September, hotel rooms
are easily available as the tourist rush declines. However, tourists planning
winter trips may have to book accommodation in advance so as to ensure provision
of heating arrangements during the period of their intended stay.
Food in Ladakh
The delicious food of Ladakh is almost the same as Tibetan food. Many local people in Ladakh practice farming of vegetables like potatoes, pumpkins, beetroots, beans etc and these vegetables are cooked in different ways. Meat dishes like mutton and chicken are very common and are cooked in a variety. Trying nourishing and usually mildly flavored local food of Ladakh
like Thukpa, Momos or steamed dumplings stuffed with meat or vegetable can be a different experience, when you enjoy your tour to Leh Ladakh in India. There are many restaurants in Ladakh where you can get Tibetan, Korean, Chinese and other international dishes of your choice
